Club owner gets prison time in human-trafficking operation in metro Detroit (In Your Own Back-Yard)

Ukrainian nightclub owner Veniamin Gonikman was ordered Wednesday to serve three years in prison for his role in a human-trafficking operation that smuggled eastern European women into the U.S. and forced them to work in local strip clubs. He is the ninth and last defendant to be convicted in the case.

Gonikman said his son, convicted of running the smuggling operation known as Beauty Search and was sentenced to 14 years in prison, wired him money in Ukraine. He said he received more than $160,000 in wages the women earned.

Gonikman came to the attention of authorities in Detroit in 2005, when a woman escaped. Authorities said the women were forced to work 12 hours a day and give earnings -- more than $1 million -- to Gonikman.

One victim testified before Congress in 2007 about her treatment. "I could not refuse to go to work or I would be beaten," she said. "I was often yelled at for not making enough money or had a gun put to my face. ... I was their slave."

About Sex-Trafficking and Narcotics Causing Death

Stephanie M. Brown: Where Orbs, Angels and Butterflies are, free…
Because Sex-Trafficking and Narcotics Causing Death is Never Forgotten

About U.S. Dept of Education on Human Trafficking

Human Trafficking and its Impact on Schools
Trafficking can involve school-age children—particularly those not living with their parents—who are vulnerable to coerced labor exploitation, domestic servitude, or commercial sexual exploitation.
Sex traffickers target children because of their vulnerability and gullibility, as well as the market demand for young victims. Those who recruit minors into prostitution violate federal anti-trafficking laws, even if there is no coercion or movement across state lines. The children at risk are not just high school students—studies demonstrate that pimps prey on victims as young as 12. Traffickers target their minor victims through telephone and on-line chat-rooms, clubs, on the street, through friends, and at malls, as well as by using girls to recruit other girls at schools and after-school programs.

Child trafficking is linked to a host of social issues including public health problems, the growth of organized crime, and decreased economic productivity due to lower education levels of victims. Its deep psychosocial impact on victims includes physical health problems such as malnourishment and sexually transmitted infections as well as emotional problems ranging from depression and anxiety to low self-esteem and behavioral problems.10 The spread of HIV/AIDS to victims of sex trafficking contributes to a public health epidemic,11 and the educational deprivation that many victims experience relegates them to the lowest rungs of society.

The U.S. Shared Hope International and Polaris Project Coalitions

Shared Hope International exists to rescue and restore women and children in crisis. We are leaders in a worldwide effort to prevent and eradicate sex trafficking and slavery through education and public awareness.

We strive for systemic change by advocating for stronger federal and state laws, operating the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline 1.888.3737.888, and providing services to help our clients and all victims of human trafficking.

Should Backpage remove adult section? Yes, it is certainly “Unjust Enrichment” from illegal activities..., Agree or Disagree?

Nick Kristof and Kamala Harris argue a large company should not profit from ads used for prostitution, including the trafficking of minors.

Human Trafficking: Why You Need to Know About It, by Manuela Kress

http://schamihealthyyouth.wordpress.com/2012/05/17/human-trafficking-why-you-need-to-know-about-it/
I recently attended a session on human trafficking hosted by the East Lansing Chapter of Zonta International. Theresa Flores, the presenter who herself is a survivor of trafficking, gave an overview of the epidemic of human trafficking in the United States with a particular focus on Michigan. Here are some of the disturbing findings of her research:
Human trafficking involves manipulation, threats, and blackmailing for commercial sex or labor. If the person being sold is under 18, it is automatically considered human trafficking. There are more human slaves in the world today than ever.
If you suspect that one of the youth you are working with is a victim you can go to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center website. The Center has a wealth of information, resources for providers and law enforcement, and links to programs nationally. You can contact the National Human Trafficking Toll Free Hotline at 1.888.3737.888. If you are interested in learning more about human trafficking there are a few books available such as Not for Sale and The Slave Across the Street.

Two Plead Guilty To Gang-Led Sex Trafficking of High School Girls

Two men associated with the Fairfax County-based Underground Gangster Crips (UGC) set have pled guilty to participating in a prostitution business that recruited and trafficked high school girls, according to announcement by officials including Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Fairfax County Police Chief Colonel David Rohrer.

On at least two occasions, in 2009 and 2011, Dove harbored juveniles, ages 16 and 17, while they were engaging in commercial sex acts. He also admitted to purchasing a credit card that was used to pay for advertisements on Backpage.com to solicit customers for the prostitution enterprise.

On May 14, 2012, Henock Ghile, aka “Knots,” 23, of Springfield, pled guilty to sex trafficking of a juvenile. In court, Ghile admitted that he was a UGC gang associate and that from May 2011 through September 2011 he transported two 17-year-old girls to work as prostitutes. Sentencing has been scheduled for Aug. 3 before United States District Judge Claude M. Hilton.

On April 14, two others associated with the UGC prostitution operation — Michael Tavon Jefferies, aka “Loc,” 21, of Woodbridge, and Christopher Sylvia, 23, of Springfield — pled guilty to sex trafficking of a juvenile.

This case was investigated by the Fairfax County Police Department and the FBI’s Washington Field Office, with assistance from the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force.

Special Assistant United States Attorney Marc Birnbaum from the Virginia attorney general’s office and Assistant United States Attorney Inayat Delawala are prosecuting the case on behalf of the United States.

SOUTHGATE: Group screens film to raise awareness on forced prostitution

http://thenewsherald.com/articles/2012/05/10/news/doc4fa96d72e37b6326140388.txt

SOUTHGATE — Human trafficking, slavery and forced prostitution are a problem the world over and one group has come to Downriver to raise awareness on the issue.
Exodus Cry, a faith-based ministry from Kansas City, Mo., was brought to the area by Melvindale police officer Rolando Hinojosa to hold a screening of the documentary “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 15600 Trenton Road. It is the first in a series of three movies, the second of which is in production.
Hinojosa, who is a member of the church, said he and the group want to inform the public about an issue they may not realize is prevalent in the United States.
Many people have the impression that forced prostitution is mostly a problem in the developing world, said Sarah Jensen, leader of a group of four from Exodus Cry who came here to show the film. She said that when she tells people that it happens across the country, they stare in disbelief.
Jensen, 30, has traveled through more than a dozen states, including California, Colorado and Wisconsin, over the last two months to show the documentary. There are three others in her groups of travelers, all in their 20s who want to spread awareness of the subject, which she said is their main goal.
“Awareness is huge right now,” Jensen said. “In reality, this thing thrives and is alive because it is hidden.”
The group is trying to get people to actively participate in helping to combat the problem.
“Once you know what’s going on, you can’t say anymore that you didn’t know,” Jensen said.

Thank you for sharing and reporting this story Alan, we indeed need more awareness because most folks don't really know what is going on in their own back yards...

RE: Public Corruption, Drug deaths and Human Trafficking...

Help US End/Stop Public Corruption, Drug deaths and Human Trafficking...

Please find attached herewith our latest Motion and its Brief, filed by our attorneys recently with the State of Michigan 27th District Court, in pdf file for your personal review regarding the latest example of the local community's continued battle Downriver, in Wayne County, with ongoing public corruption, drug deaths and human trafficking issues. We, many of us in the community, have tried for the last 6-years, since the tragic deaths of our children, to raise the awareness and help our families, friends and neighbors. How are we to understand or explain why those of us who stand-up, speak-out and want to help, are literally being forced to stop, keep quite, or just walk-away, because of or by and through the very same fraud, force and coercion tactics used by other ongoing criminal enterprises or activities that are causing our social demise? We really do need to work together for the benefit of all parties concerned.

Respectfully submitted via emails, online and on our blogs in support of the Towle family, downriver communities and all our friends,

Richard A. Sands, Ret. PI

Help US End/Stop Drugs, Guns and Human Trafficking ZX/ZY-Solutions: Please Repost, Repeat and Share the Awareness

Congressman Continues his Charge Against AG Holder Over Fast and Furious

Republicans have long threatened to bring contempt of Congress charges against Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. in connection with the Department of Justice’s botched Fast and Furious gun-trafficking sting. Now they say they have taken the first step.

A copy of the draft charges and a memorandum written by Issa can be found here.

The Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), on Thursday sent out a 44-page draft of proposed contempt charges against Holder to the other members of the committee and said it would be discussed at an upcoming hearing.

“This briefing paper and draft contempt report explains the case, to both Members of the Committee and the American people, for holding Attorney General Holder in contempt of Congress,” Issa said in a press release.

The charges are still a draft and no action has been taken. The draft charges say that Holder is in contempt of Congress for failure to comply with a congressional subpoena for DOJ documents, and Issa writes that he has exhausted all other available options to obtain compliance.

“The Department’s refusal to work with Congress to ensure that it has fully complied with the Committee’s efforts to compel the production of documents and information related to this controversy is inexcusable and cannot stand,” the draft charges read. “Those responsible for allowing Fast and Furious to proceed and those who are preventing the truth about the operation from coming out must be held accountable for their actions.”

Issa issues draft of resolution of contempt against Holder over ‘Fast and Furious’

The chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has circulated to committee members a draft of a contempt of Congress resolution against Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., citing the "refusal" of the nation's top prosecutor to cooperate in an investigation of the botched "Fast and Furious" gunrunning operation.

The 64-page draft resolution and accompanying 17-page staff briefing paper explain what Rep. Darrell E. Issa, California Republican and committee chairman, called the "reckless conduct" of the Fast and Furious investigation, the "hardships" faced by the family of a U.S. Border Patrol agent killed with a weapon purchased in the probe, how agents who blew the whistle on the operation faced retaliation, and the "carnage in Mexico" that Fast and Furious helped fuel.

Investigations by Mr. Issa and Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, found that ATF had allowed more than 2,000 weapons [-] including AK-47 assault rifles [-] to be "walked" to Mexican drug smugglers. Two Romanian-made AK-47s purchased during the probe were found at the site of the December 2010 shooting death of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian A. Terry, 40, who was killed just north of the Arizona border town of Nogales.

Mr. Grassley noted on Thursday that the Justice Department and Mr. Holder initially denied gunwalking occurred, but have since withdrawn the denials and admitted that ATF whistleblowers were right to complain about the tactic. He said that despite the constitutional responsibility of Congress to conduct oversight of the executive branch, the Justice Department "stonewalled every step" of the Fast and Furious investigation. He said the department provided 80,000 pages of documents to its Office of Inspector General in connection with Fast and Furious, but only 6,000 pages of documents to Congress.

"Congressman Issa deserves credit for moving forward on contempt. The attorney general and the Justice Department are thumbing their nose at the constitutional authority provided to the legislative branch to conduct oversight," Mr. Grassley said, adding that Mr. Holder is facing a "real test of leadership."

"He can force the department to come clean, or he can force a high-stakes political conflict between the legislative and executive branches," he said. "It´s past time to hold accountable those public officials responsible for our own government´s role in walking guns into the hands of criminals."

Former Secret Service Agent Reacts to Colombia Scandal

http://www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/politics/former-secret-service-agent-reacts-to-colombia-scandal-4-16-2012
PHOENIX – More trouble for a group of Secret Service agents involved in a growing prostitution scandal. Congress may soon be conducting its own investigation.
We talked to a former secret service agent who lives here in the valley. Donald Tucker is shocked by what happened — saying if the allegations are true, these agents could have comprised the president’s security.
“There are so many bad things that could have happened with this incident, it’s mind boggling.”
For 25 years, Donald Tucker risked his life working for the Secret Service. He’s proud of being a part of such an elite agency. So when he got a call telling him about the scandal…
“I still have a lot of anger that these guys were to bring down the prestige of the agency that I worked for,for 25 years and do something stupid,” he says.
The Secret Service is still trying to figure out what exactly happened at a Colombian hotel last week. An advance team of agents was preparing for the president’s visit. Eleven of them were sent home after apparently bringing prostitutes back to the hotel.
“What if one of the prostitutes had been working for a terrorist organization and was sent to this hotel to meet with agents to find out what the president’s schedule was? The agents have the president’s schedule of where he’s going to be, who he’s going to talk to. What if some of those documents got out prior to the president’s arrival?”
“These guys are not professional. They don’t have any integrity. They would go to a foreign country and not only embarrass the county, they’re embarrassing their agency and they’re embarrassing the president of the United States.”
Tucker worked for the Secret Service during Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton administrations.
How can or do we fight worldwide corruption, the global sex-trafficking atrocities, especially when our own government officials are engaged in exploiting the victims, survivors and their families of organized modern-day slavery?
How, in God’s name (as “In God We Trust”) can we tell or ask the rest of the World to shape-up to our own righteous Philosophy or Standards, the United States allegedly advocates, when by example we all fail, indeed, as in do as I say, not as I do?
We must continue to publish, repost, repeat and share information for everyone’s human trafficking, modern-day slavery, prevention, protection, prosecution and partnership programs intended to provide awareness, education and enlightenment that advocates to “Look beneath the surface” in our own back-yards!
