SOUTHGATE — Human trafficking,
slavery and forced prostitution are a problem the world over and one group has
come to Downriver to raise awareness on the issue.
Exodus Cry, a faith-based ministry from Kansas City, Mo., was brought to the area by Melvindale police officer Rolando Hinojosa to hold a screening of the documentary “Nefarious: Merchant of Souls” at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 15600 Trenton Road. It is the first in a series of three movies, the second of which is in production.
Hinojosa, who is a member of the church, said he and the group want to inform the public about an issue they may not realize is prevalent in the United States.
Many people have the impression that forced prostitution is mostly a problem in the developing world, said Sarah Jensen, leader of a group of four from Exodus Cry who came here to show the film. She said that when she tells people that it happens across the country, they stare in disbelief.

Jensen, 30, has traveled through more than a dozen states, including
California, Colorado and Wisconsin, over the last two months to show the
documentary. There are three others in her groups of travelers, all in their
20s who want to spread awareness of the subject, which she said is their main
goal.
“Awareness is huge right now,” Jensen said. “In reality, this thing thrives and is alive because it is hidden.”
The group is trying to get people to actively participate in helping to combat the problem.
“Once you know what’s going on, you can’t say anymore that you didn’t know,” Jensen said.
